Life Path Number: How to Calculate It From Your Birth Date

The central number in vedic numerology. It is calculated from your birth date in about a minute, stays with you for life, and describes the basic scenario you fulfil most naturally.

What the life path number is

Your life path number (also called the destiny number) is the sum of all the digits in your birth date, reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9. Each of the nine digits maps to an archetype: a way of thinking, a set of strengths, the typical traps, and the areas where you express yourself most easily.

It is not a prediction or a verdict. It is a map of tendencies — a starting kit of traits that is easier to work with once you know it.

The calculation formula

The method is the same for any date:

1. Write out your birth date as digits: day, month, year.
2. Add all the digits together.
3. If the sum is greater than 9, add its digits again. Repeat until a single digit from 1 to 9 remains.

Example for 19.10.1986:

1 + 9 + 1 + 0 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 6 = 35
3 + 5 = 8

Why only 1–9, without master numbers

Vedic numerology works with nine digits — one for each planet that shapes character (including Rahu and Ketu). The sum is therefore always reduced to the 1–9 range, and the "master numbers" 11, 22 and 33 are not singled out: 11 becomes 2, 22 becomes 4, 33 becomes 6. This is what separates the vedic approach from the Western school and keeps the system whole and unambiguous.

How do I calculate my life path number?

Add up every digit of your birth date and reduce the sum to a single digit from 1 to 9. For example, 19.10.1986 → 1+9+1+0+1+9+8+6 = 35 → 3+5 = 8.

Are master numbers 11, 22, 33 used?

In the vedic tradition, no. The life path number is always reduced to the 1–9 range, so master numbers are not treated as separate values.

Does the life path number change over time?

No. It is derived from your birth date and stays the same for life. Only temporary cycles, such as the personal year and personal month, change.
